Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know, answered plainly.

What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?+
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a UK Government initiative that provides upfront grants to help homeowners in England and Wales replace fossil fuel heating systems with more efficient, low-carbon alternatives — primarily air source and ground source heat pumps. It is administered by Ofgem and runs until March 2028.
How much is the heat pump grant worth?+
The grant is currently worth £7,500 for air source and ground source heat pumps. This amount is deducted directly from your installation invoice — you never receive the money yourself. Your MCS-certified installer claims the grant on your behalf from Ofgem.
Does the scheme cover Scotland or Northern Ireland?+
No. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme covers England and Wales only. Scotland has its own Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan scheme. Northern Ireland has the Boiler Replacement Scheme. If you're in Scotland or Northern Ireland, we'd recommend checking the relevant government websites for your area.
When does the scheme end?+
The current Boiler Upgrade Scheme runs until March 2028. However, grants are allocated in annual tranches, and popular periods can see funds run short. We recommend not leaving it too long if you're seriously considering applying.
Does my property type affect eligibility?+
Yes. Detached, semi-detached, terraced houses and bungalows are generally more suitable for heat pumps. Flats are less commonly eligible due to shared building structures and space constraints, though some may qualify. The eligibility checker will give you an honest initial assessment based on your property type.
Do I need a certain EPC rating?+
Your property must have a valid EPC. If your EPC has recommendations (such as loft insulation), these may need to be addressed before a grant application is approved. However, there is no minimum EPC rating required to apply — even D-rated properties can qualify if the recommendations are met.
Can landlords apply?+
Yes, landlords can apply for the BUS grant, but only for domestic properties. The grant is applied to the installation cost regardless of whether the property is owner-occupied or rented out. However, the application must still be made through an MCS-certified installer.
Is your service really free for homeowners?+
Yes, completely free. We are paid by our installer partners when they successfully complete a job — we charge them a lead generation fee. You'll never be asked to pay anything, and there are no hidden charges at any stage.
What happens after I submit my details?+
We review your eligibility results and pass your details to one or two local MCS-certified installers matched to your area. If your property is a good fit, they'll be in touch to arrange a free, no-obligation property assessment. You are never obligated to proceed with any installer.
Will I be bombarded with calls?+
No. We only pass your details to a maximum of two installers, and our partners are required to respect your communication preferences. If you experience any unwanted contact, let us know and we'll address it immediately.
How do you vet your installer partners?+
All installers in our network must hold current MCS certification, carry appropriate insurance, and have verified customer reviews. We conduct checks before onboarding and monitor partner performance on an ongoing basis. Installers who receive poor feedback from homeowners are removed from our network.
