FAQ

Common questions

Clear answers to the main questions homeowners usually ask before they enquire.

What is ECO4?+
ECO4 (Energy Company Obligation 4) is a government scheme that requires large energy suppliers to fund free energy efficiency upgrades for eligible households. Measures include insulation, boiler replacements, and heat pump installations — all at no cost to eligible homeowners and renters.
Who qualifies for ECO4?+
You may qualify if you receive certain means-tested benefits such as Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Child Benefit, Income Support, or Tax Credits — or if your home has a poor EPC rating (D, E, F, or G). Both homeowners and private renters can be eligible.
Do I have to pay anything?+
No. If you are eligible, all works are fully funded. There is no cost to you at any point.
Does the checker guarantee I qualify?+
No. The checker gives an initial indication based on your answers. Final eligibility is confirmed by an approved installer who will carry out a free property assessment.
Will my details be shared without my permission?+
No. We only share your details with installer partners if you give your consent at the end of the checker.
When does ECO4 end?+
ECO4 has been extended and will end on 31 December 2026. Funding is limited and allocated on a first-come basis, so we recommend checking eligibility as soon as possible.
What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?+
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a government grant of up to £7,500 for homeowners in England and Wales who want to replace a fossil fuel heating system with a heat pump. There is no means-testing — it is open to any eligible homeowner regardless of income or benefits. The scheme runs until March 2028 under current policy.
What if I don’t qualify for ECO4?+
You may still qualify for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme which offers a £7,500 grant toward heat pump installation, or the Warm Homes Plan which launches fully in 2026 with support for a wider range of households.

Heat Checker

Check your eligibility

This takes about 2 minutes. Your result is an initial estimate, not a final grant decision.

Step 1 of 9

What is your property status?

Both homeowners and renters can qualify for ECO4. Your status helps us identify the right route for you.

Step 2 of 9

Do you or anyone in your household currently receive any of these benefits?

Receiving any of these benefits is the main route to fully funded ECO4 upgrades — insulation, boiler replacement, or heat pump — at no cost to you.

Step — of —

If energy improvements were available for your home, would your landlord or housing provider allow them to be carried out?

ECO4 works require landlord consent for rented properties. Most landlords support energy improvements — they improve the property's EPC rating and reduce tenant energy bills.

Step 3 of 9

What type of property is it?

Property type affects which energy efficiency measures may be suitable.

Step 4 of 9

What is your current heating system?

This helps estimate whether your current setup could be suitable for replacement or upgrade.

Step 5 of 9

What is your postcode?

We use this to identify whether we may be able to match you with an installer in your area.

England, Wales and Scotland.
Step 8 of 9

When are you looking to upgrade?

This helps us prioritise enquiries and understand intent.

Step — of —

Would you be willing to consider contributing towards the cost if eligible for the grant?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme provides up to £7,500 towards a heat pump installation. However, total installation costs typically range from £10,000 to £25,000 depending on your property — meaning most homeowners contribute £5,000 to £15,000 or more towards the final cost.

It looks like this route may not be the right fit right now.

Based on your answers — particularly around landlord consent for energy works — the available schemes are unlikely to be suitable for your current situation. This may change in the future, and you're welcome to check again if your circumstances change.
